I became a teacher in 1971. I have worked in Ridgewood, Queens, Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Half Hollow Hills, Dix Hills, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Houston, Texas, and the last 25 years have been in Great Neck, New York as a first grade teacher. Prior to Great Neck, I taught every grade from second through twelfth. Part of my success in my profession, I owe to Bertha Stark. I vowed NEVER to be like her (see below). And this past July (2010), I retired...after 39 wonderful years of teaching.

School Story:

BERTHA STARK...need I say more? I had her for second grade, (PS 221 wasn't built yet) and when I went to JHS 67 I had her again for Art. I still wonder why a 2nd grade teacher was teaching art. I will never forget painting a picture and my elbow tipped over the green paint...all over my picture, the floor, and Bonnie Lane, dressed in red. She looked like a Christmas tree decorated in green paint. All Mrs. Stark could do was call for the "section sheet" and gave me a DOUBLE demerit. I had never received a demerit in all my life! What was I going to tell my father? I cried the rest of the day...and when I got to 8th period English, Mrs. Rose (who was also my guidance counsellor) consulted with me, between my tears. She told me, "I never heard of anything so ridiculous in all my life...Give me the section sheet. I'm not even discussing this with Mrs. Stark. I'm removing the demerit." Thank you, Mrs. Rose! I have NEVER forgotten you...NOR Mrs. Stark.
