Little Neck Lions Football Team
Posted Thursday, August 27, 2009 12:47 PM

Starting in 1960 or 1961,  the Douglaston/Little Neck neighborhood was represented in the Long Island Football League (LIFL) with a team of 15-17 year olds named "The Little Neck Lions".   There were several other teams from Queens, Brooklyn and Nassau County in the League.  Games were reported in the now defunct Star-Journal and Long Island Press. Almost all the players attended JHS67, with a few from Catholic schools.

The team was sponsored by the Lions Club of Little Neck and by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).  The Head Coach was Calvin C. Clark and the Assistant Coach was Eugene Nichols Sr., both local residents with collegiate or semi-pro football backgrounds.  The team always maintained a winning record in the 8 game regular seasons.  In 1962, The Lions won their division title in a game against the Bayridge Vikings played in mid November in Brooklyn on the other teams home turf.  I was team captain on the championship team and later went on to coach the younger players when I was in college.

Many of the players went on to play for Bayside High School's first football team (JV) in the fall of 1962 and a few went on to the collegiate level.

Are there any former players, cheerleaders, or fans still out there?

MAX,

The Little Neck Lions !  What a bunch of pussys they were. They couldn't beat The Sisters Of The Poor ! Didn't they call you big pussy because you wore a skirt over your uniform ? Did you also wear that same skirt when you bought schmaltz herring at Waldbaum's. It's no wonder you couldn't get a job at Korvette's !

Kenny, now you've gone too far.

As a matter of fact we beat The Sisters of The Poor 27-21 in the fall of 1961.  Those girls were tougher than The Stallions Football Team from Beech Hills which you played on.

Those skirts you are referring to are not skirts, they're kilts.

We had many players who went on to serve their country in the Vietnam War so show some respect where respect is due or you and I might have to settle this once and for all like real men.   That's right, ............................I'll sue you for all you've got.

Kenny Miller,

You are nothing but a trouble maker.  I set up a posting on a topic I thought might get

some positive feedback and you respond negatively.  What's your problem in life?

Who asked you to get involved in this topic, or for that matter, the Waldbaums postings.

Can't you keep out of other people's business?  You're ruining the positive aspects of

these message forums.  Whats next?  Are you sure you even went to JHS67?  I couldn't

find you in the yearbook.

MAX JAROLEM,

This is America, home of the free, land of the brave. In America we have freedom of speech! You must be an American Communist and a Michael Jackson groupie !!!!!

Ken

PS-  You never even worked at Korvette's and didn't have a clue what it stands for !

Let's get back to the positive side of this subject. Max, you didn't ask if any of us played for the Lions. Well, I did, for only 1 year. I played defensive back after getting beaten up pretty badly at middle linebacker by our running back at practices. But I remember it as a great experience. Hope you and Kenny work things out. Communist???
