Dear Friend,
On Sunday, June 6, I will participate in the Liver Life Walk for the third year in a row at Battery Park in New York City. I will be raising funds for the work of the American Liver Foundation – the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to liver health and disease prevention. I have formed the Mountaineers, and my personal goal is to raise more than $2000.00 this year for this worthy cause.
As you may or may not know, I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2001. I developed stage IV cirrhosis and had 6-9 months to live until I received a liver transplant on November 19, 2007. Fortunately things are going well, despite many ups and downs with my health and 2 major surgeries, as well as several shorter stays in the hospital. Today I continue to improve and almost feel back to my old self.
Liver disease is often unknown or misunderstood. Here are some compelling statistics:
· 1 out of every 10 Americans is affected by about 100 types of liver disease.
· That is 30 million people — the number of people in the United States living with diabetes and cancer combined, and the same number of people who live in America’s 15 largest cities.
· 60% of the 26,000 people who die each year from cirrhosis have no history of alcohol abuse.
· Nearly 17,000 people are on the waiting list for a liver transplant.
You can support my efforts by making a tax-deductible contribution to the American Liver Foundation:
